A Right-Wing Preacher Suggested Jesus Wouldn’t Like Gun Control And Got Obliterated By Twitter

When it comes to things like marijuana, abortion, gay marriage, etc. the Christian right is gung-ho BAN IT ALL. When it comes to guns (or Trump’s lying, adultery, and racism) they throw up their hands and say “well, what can you do?”

No one is more emblematic of the morally bankrupt hypocrisy of the Christian right than Rev. Franklin Graham, who managed to squeeze a whole lot of awfulness into a single tweet:

Graham, son of the late Rev. Billy Graham seemed to be making a point about why people who want to end America’s gun violence epidemic should just give up already. He also seemed to be suggesting Jesus wouldn’t be down with gun control, which, LOL.

Naturally, people chimed in to take the preacher back to Sunday School:

But the reality of what Graham was saying might be even worse. Graham’s tweet linked to a Facebook post where the right-wing preacher shared a staggering and misleading Fox News report about London’s murder rate.

The headline for the linked article reads “London murder rate beats New York for month as stabbings surge.”

Graham’s full post reads:

You may find this a surprising report—Even with handguns, assault weapons, and most guns of any kind being banned in England for many years, the murder rate in London was higher than in New York City last month. They have seen a surge in vicious stabbings. We can have demonstrations, sign petitions, even collect every gun—and every knife—in the world, but a wicked and evil heart will find a way to take another life. Jesus said, “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies” (Matthew 15:19).

This weekend we celebrated Easter. The most pivotal point in history, when the Son of God, Jesus Christ, took the sins of the world on Himself, died on a cross to pay the penalty for our sins, and was raised from the dead to sit at the right hand of the Father. If we put our faith and trust in Him, not only will He forgive our sins, but He alone can heal the human heart.

Whoa, must be a scary surge in stabbings in London, right?? Not exactly! There were 15 homicides in London in February and 11 in New York City. In March, there were 22 murders in London and 21 in New York City. Those might seem like high numbers, but keep in mind both cities have populations approaching 9 million people. New York City has lowered its murder rate dramatically over the past several years and London’s has stayed relatively low.

Here’s a graph from the BBC:

Not so alarming now, right? Stay woke, folks.
