Former senator Joe Lieberman gave a quote to FOX Business on Thursday saying that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez isn’t the future of the Democratic party.
It did not go well for him.
Unsurprisingly, when America’s least-favorite former representative criticizes America’s new favorite representative the odds aren’t exactly even.
Ocasio-Cortez batted Lieberman aside like an annoying fly with four simple but devastating words that dismissed the former Senator completely.
New party, who dis? https://t.co/2cznisv8tB— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) January 11, 2019
She’s just so much better at this than they are.
Stop trying, guys.— Charles P. Pierce (@CharlesPPierce) January 11, 2019
RIP Joe Lieberman, he died of memes https://t.co/xIE5yDS4dC— For Chief, This Is It (@jesseltaylor) January 11, 2019
Lieberman’s history of switching party allegiances, endorsing John McCain for President in 2008, and from dooming Obamacare’s crucial public option by opposing it as the tie-breaking vote hasn’t exactly endeared him to Democrats,
So the idea that Joe Lieberman knows what’s good for the party was seen by most as fairly absurd.
Joe Lieberman, the guy who endorsed McCain over Obama for president in 2008 and insisted he was "independent" while receiving more than $31.4M in campaign funds from special interest groups deigns to tell us who the future of the party is. ? Joe Lieberman isn't even a Democrat anymore, so why doesn't he join in a shuttered diner for a cup of steaming hot STFU all the other non-Democrats who have Big Thoughts about the future of a party to which they don't belong.— Melissa McEwan (@Shakestweetz) January 11, 2019
Does anyone in the Democratic Party care what Joe Lieberman thinks? https://t.co/fbzV4RWJGY— Renato Mariotti (@renato_mariotti) January 11, 2019
This is exactly the amount of deference Joe Lieberman deserves from Democrats. https://t.co/eQdbMIPd7B— Greg Pak (@gregpak) January 11, 2019
Joe Lieberman sabotaged both the 2000 election and Obamacare’s public option, betraying Democrats over and over again on his way to becoming a Trump supporter. That turncoat is literally the last person on earth who gets to chime in on what the party’s future should be.— Adam Best (@adamcbest) January 11, 2019
Ocasio-Cortez then burnished her nerd cred by following up her Lieberman smackdown with an ominous quote from Watchmen in which the character Rorschach says to his fellow inmates who are threatening him: “You don’t seem to understand…I’m not locked in here with you. You’re locked in here with me.”
The quote follows a particularly violent scene in which Rorschach has just kicked a would-be attacker’s ass, and could only be read as a thinly-veiled “watch out” from AOC to her many critics and online trolls.
To quote Alan Moore: “None of you understand. I'm not locked up in here with YOU. You're locked up in here with ME.” ? https://t.co/8TCmKNJlkD— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) January 11, 2019
Most responses simply boiled down to the spirit of AOC’s dismissive “Who dis?” in that people simply don’t think Joe Lieberman is relevant to anything anymore.
I imagine a whole lot of folks under the age of 80 are asking who Joe Lieberman is.— andy lassner (@andylassner) January 11, 2019
Hilarious for Joe Lieberman to attack Ocasio. I mean, unlike Lieberman, Ocasio could win her primary.— Oliver Willis (@owillis) January 11, 2019
“The Internet is not the future of technology” wrote Joe Lieberman on parchment with a quill.— The Volatile Mermaid (@OhNoSheTwitnt) January 11, 2019

Go get a pen. I want you to write something down.
JOE LIEBERMAN IS NOT A DEMOCRAT.
He's a Trump supporter and his opinions about Democrats are irrelevant.
I feel like we keep having this conversation.
Let's not do this again. https://t.co/4Fb4YExKrq
imagine the sort of traumatic head injury you'd have to suffer to call up Joe Lieberman in 2019 and ask his opinion on anything— Jason Linkins (@dceiver) January 11, 2019

As one person pointed out, Lieberman’s disapproval is actually a badge of honor.
