Thursday, the Democrats officially take control of the U.S. House of Representatives. This shift in the balance of power is a historical development in its own right, with the biggest swing towards Democrats in the House since Watergate, but there’s another reason to celebrate too. The incoming freshmen class of Democratic Representatives is younger, more female, and more diverse than at any time in our country’s history. Incoming Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez celebrated with a phot sure to become an instant classic, courtesy of Vanity Fair.
Vanity Fair’s latest issue profiles “power players” in Washington, D.C. and Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted out a banger of a photo from the feature:
Sí, se puede. pic.twitter.com/Mdkf01qKZQ— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) January 2, 2019
Pictured from left to right are incoming freshmen Democratic Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar, Deb Haaland, Veronica Escobar, and Sharice Davids.
The feature also bizarrely includes smarmy right-wing twerp Ben Shaprio, shifty “conservative” senators Joe Manchin (D-WV), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Susan Collins (R-ME), and hollow self-defeating capitalist Michael Bloomberg (I-Wall Street).
Still, it’s telling they used the message of the incoming diverse class of freshman Reps as the tagline for the article: “We did not come to play.” None of the old stale politicians (and the young stale Shapiro) are capable of uttering anything that might resonate with a normal thinking, feeling human being.
The reaction from Twitter was a resounding “hellllllll yes!”

The incoming class of freshmen representatives is going to be sworn in on Thursday, and not a moment too soon. The government is (still) in the midst of a Trump-led shutdown, the country is (still!) in the midst of an ongoing constitutional crisis, and—oh yeah—climate change (STILL!) threatens to upend life on earth.
Anyway, speaking of viral tweets, incoming Representative Ilhan Omar tweeted a heartwarming and inspirational photo of herself and her father highlighting her journey from refugee to Congresswoman:
23 years ago, from a refugee camp in Kenya, my father and I arrived at an airport in Washington DC.— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) January 2, 2019
Today, we return to that same airport on the eve of my swearing in as the first Somali-American in Congress. #Hope #Ilhan 🙏🏾 pic.twitter.com/jVeP3DOipN
Ain’t that America?
