Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez might be a big media draw, but she’s not accepting the attention uncritically.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently appeared on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert and she was asked, on a scale from 1 to 10, how many f*cks she gives about “making waves” in Congress. Her answer? Zero.
But AOC took issue with how publications phrased headlines about her Late Show appearance because she didn’t actually say “I give zero f*cks”:
I actually didn’t say this, so while I know “brown women cursing” drives clicks, maybe you accurately quote the whole exchange instead of manipulating people into thinking I said this sentence instead of just the word “zero.” https://t.co/MrXIbALNP3— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) January 22, 2019
You can understand her frustration after seeing her colleague Rep. Rashida Tlaib pilloried by cable news outlets for her “impeach the motherf*cker” comment about Trump.
After criticizing The Hill, Ocasio-Cortez showed how fast fake news travels by flagging other publications that attributed the unutterable swear word to her:
She also hammered home the reason for her criticism. AOC isn’t nitpicking headlines for fun, she’s doing it because these linguistic shortcuts help strengthen existing negative stereotypes about women in power:
This reinforces lazy tropes about women leaders in media:— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) January 22, 2019
- Older + seasoned, but unlikeable
- Passionate, but angry
- Smart, but crazy
- Well-intentioned, but naive
- Attractive, but uninformed or gaffe-prone
It’s unoriginal, lazy, and men don’t get the same either/or coverage.
In other Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez outrage news, right-wing pundit and MSNBC contributor Hugh Hewitt (really MSNBC?) tried to bash AOC as someone who tends to say stupid things. In the process, Hewitt said a VERY stupid thing. He tried to compare Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to gaffe-prone Joe Biden, and it, uh, didn’t go as intended.
MSNBC's Hugh Hewitt: "Joe Biden has actually gone through the time machine and transgendered into Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@aoc)."— Angelo Carusone (@GoAngelo) January 22, 2019
And remember. Hewitt is often pointed to as example of a sensible intellectual moderate conservative. Uh-huh.https://t.co/89uzmBs08Q
Hewitt started his anti-AOC rant with a little condescension. “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a wonderful person. Sparkling with youthful energy, unmoved by her inexperience, confident in her lack of knowledge, and completely charismatic,” he said.
He then played a clip of AOC talking about climate change and casting the issue as a generational challenge on par with World War II. After offering no scientific evidence for why that’s not the case (because there isn’t any), Hewitt simply dismissed her analogy as a gaffe.
“Joe Biden has actually gone through the time machine and transgendered into Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,” Hewitt said, showcasing exactly the kind of brilliant insight decades of experience in conservative media gets you (again, REALLY MSNBC??).
“This was Joe Biden—she’s going to fill the Biden gap. The Biden gap concerned me. Some day Joe will leave the public stage and we will not have people who will say outlandish things. But now the Biden gap is filled,” he continued.
It’s a breathtakingly stupid thing to say, and especially so on a day when both the threat to transgender rights and the fact that a record number of Americans are “very worried” about the threat of global climate change are in the news.
But don’t blame Hugh Hewitt! Unfortunately the guy’s just fossilized with boomer torpor, unmoved by the experiences of others, confident in his ignorance, and completely uncharismatic.
Anyway, here’s to AOC giving zero f*cks about making waves and right-wing attacks and infinite f*cks about climate change.
