The partial government shutdown being forced by President Trump is now the longest shutdown in U.S. history and, with likely millions of people directly or indirectly affected, real concerns are mounting about how long people can survive and keep doing their jobs without pay.
Unsurprisingly it was the Democrats’ new headline-grabbing, Republican-terrorizing representative from New York, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who spoke out most forcefully.
AOC questioned the premise that workers could practically continue to do their jobs without pay as the shutdown stretched into its 22nd day.
How can the GOP expect all TSA & other workers to reliably show up without a paycheck?— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) January 12, 2019
Workers rely on services like childcare and transit to work in the first place. Those services don’t take IOUs.
It’s not that workers “refuse” to work w/o a paycheck. Without pay, many can’t. https://t.co/NJOM00f8c5
Many TSA workers are calling in sick during the pay freeze, which has concerning implications both for the workers and for the security of airports and other vital transportation hubs.
Also, it should go without saying that workers deserve to get paid for their work and shouldn’t have to suffer just because our super-rich president wants to play political poker with the Democrats in a bid to get his wall money.
The Tump administration has suggested that unpaid workers barter menial labor against their rent until paychecks resume, showing just how out of touch they are with working people.
This should never be happening. 45 needs to end this, but he does not care about working people... https://t.co/ciUJSmzKoe— OfficialDemocraticBlackCaucusMacombCounty (@OfficialCaucus) January 12, 2019
You'll need remind the GOP of the obvious every day, AOC. They don't live in a middle class world and they do not have the empathetic gene. Plus they tend to be insecure, even paranoid that these people are going to take their money and their jobs. https://t.co/TaOD1htvDw— Edward Brennan (@EdwTBrennan) January 12, 2019
As AOC pointed out it’s silly to expect workers to be able to keep doing their jobs without pay, as if it’s merely a choice, when many literally can’t work without pay, unless they want to abandon their children and starve to death and so forth.
Alexandria can put herself in someone else's shoes. So important and not typical of most politicians. I just had to explain to someone yesterday the fact that some CANT work even a day for free even if they want to. https://t.co/yN2zHpqxSt— Political Nonsense (@BestHopeOfEarth) January 12, 2019
They may also be unable to physically get to work if they can’t afford to pay for gas or others transportation. It’s the sort of simple, real-world consideration, that wealthy ruling class doesn’t understand.
This so justifies my statement that most of Congress and Humpty Dumpster do not have a clue about the lives of their constituents. https://t.co/rqt7CcJu5e— Korkie (@Korkie) January 12, 2019
THANK YOU! https://t.co/sO7jwZagLI— Bizzi (@bizzimomma2) January 12, 2019
The professionalism of the TSA folks showing up to work despite not being paid awes me. I am profoundly thankful to them for protecting us. https://t.co/nXClX8ju6T— Tony Verow MD (@tonyver45) January 12, 2019
Hopefully this idiotic shutdown will end soon and people can go back to getting paid for the important work that they do. If someone on Fox & Friends could make that point so that the president actually sees it, that would be great.
