The Conservative Political Action Conference (AKA CPAC) is currently underway in National Harbor, MD and it’s offering a terrifying glimpse into the right-wing funhouse mirror where conservative politics lives. CPAC was once a fairly libertarian-ish gathering where young, bow-tied conservatives would listen with rapt attention to right-wing intellectuals talk about auditing the Fed (or whatever). Now it’s essentially a distillation of the poisonous racism, paranoia, and anti-intellectualism that allowed Trump to ascend to the presidency. Also, they have coloring books.
A coloring book featured at CPAC 2019 surfaced on Twitter today, and it’s a doozy.
The coloring book includes confused right-wing “parodies” of left-wing politics like “the left is violently opposed to big business except for Starbucks”:
It also includes a laughable number of references to Guy Fawkes’ masks, which everyone knows all liberals love!
There’s even a bizarre and dated shoutout to Sandra Fluke, the women’s rights activist Rush Limbaugh called a “slut” in 2012 for daring to say birth control should be covered by health insurance:
Here’s the whole thing, in case you want to print it out for the activities at home:
The coloring book is part of an effort to promote the right-wing movie No Safe Spaces, by Adam Corolla and Dennis Prager, who both seem pretty angry about “PC culture.” Unfortunately, there’s little daylight between the distortions of the left in the coloring book and the distortions of the left promoted by right-wing media. If it’s meant to be a parody it’s really bad, and if it’s meant to be funny it’s really not.
