Where you live can have a huge impact on your quality of life. Imagine moving out of your parents’ house and into your own place, just to be told by a landlord that you can only use the kitchen at certain times of the day and that you aren’t allowed to have any guests.
Those are some pretty unreasonable demands, but one landlord is asking exactly that.
Jessica Marteny, a woman living in North Carolina, posted in a Facebook group called “awful roommates: roommates from hell” her landlord’s rules for tenants—and people can’t believe how strict they are.
The rules dictate that there can be no drinking or drugs on the property, which is, I guess okay?
But they also say that there can be no guests, no changing of the thermostat (which was set at a toasty 68 degrees), and no cooking between the hours of 9:30 pm to 6 am on weekdays (9:30 am on weekends). It also mentions that the property is under 24-hour surveillance, which sounds pretty creepy.
The part about the bathroom makes me think this is a boarding house of some sort, with one communal bathroom. Hence, the rules about the kitchen, but still. The hours are ridiculous. Why couldn’t a person make breakfast at 8 am on a Saturday?
And the thing about no guests at all is just ridiculous.
People on Facebook were completely flabbergasted.
They pointed out that this didn’t seem like a very good landlord.
I mean, the surveillance is taking it a little too far.
One person asked if he was renting out a prison cell because seriously, these rules are out of control.
But at least one person pointed out that maybe the rules were so strict because the landlord had had problems before.
