A young woman was having doubts about whether her roommate was into her or not. So she went to Reddit for advice—and after copious suggestions and a viral post that her roommate actually saw, the two are dating.
It feels like the largest scale group dating intervention in history, but it began as an anxious list of interactions and “what does this mean”-type questions.
Essentially, OP wanted to know: Is my roommate attracted to me?
“I’ve lived with my roommate for over a year now. We met in high school (a few classes) but we were never really friends […] We ended up going to the same college together though and decided since we know each other we should room together. She’s a v lovely roommate but I’ve ended up developing a pretty huge crush on her after I started being in her company a lot (I’m a lesbian. I’m fully out. My roommate knows this),” writes Reddit user myfriendisanightmare.
“The problem is, I can’t figure out if she’s flirting with me or not. Please help me. I’ll list some instances from the past year in no order that have stood out to me.”
She then listed 15 probable romantic gestures and actions that have occurred between her and her roommate, including gift buying, hand-holding, compliments, caregiving, and intense gazing.
“She once held my hand while we were walking outside and she wanted to pull me along. She didn’t let go until she had to, and since then whenever we go out, she holds my hand. I don’t know if it’s platonic,” she writes.
“Her baby niece came to visit once with her sister and she referred to me as “auntie’s very special girlfriend”. I freaked but just laughed it off.”
“She once held my hand while we were walking outside and she wanted to pull me along. She didn’t let go until she had to, and since then whenever we go out, she holds my hand. I don’t know if it’s platonic.”
And so forth. There are a lot of indicators that her roommate is interested in her romantically, but being nineteen is rough and romance can make you feel scared and uncertain.
Plus, they’re already living together — can you imagine how awkward that might be if one of them makes a move and is rebuffed?
Reddit basically agreed that there is love in the air. User tesselode writes, “you’re already dating and you just don’t realize it yet,” which sounds accurate.
Folks became invested in the drama and eagerly awaited an update. A Twitter user shared the story and started a viral thread — which the roommate happened upon. Does the Internet ever feel small to you?
