Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) was confronted by activists from the Sunrise Movement in her office today, and it didn’t really go well for the senator. If “Sunrise Movement” rings a bell, it’s probably because the organization staged a sit-in in Nancy Pelosi’s office at the beginning of the new Congress in support of climate change action and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dropped by to register her support.
Today, the group brought a cadre of children to Feinstein’s office voice their support of the Green New Deal, a plan to aggressively combat climate change by transitioning the United States away from fossil fuels and toward a 100% renewable energy economy.
They pressed Senator Feinstein on the Green New Deal, highlighting the urgency of dealing with global climate change. Unfortunately, Feinstein reacted by telling the kids that she had just won a big election and also had been doing this for quite some time, so who the hell are you to whine about it? It was a pretty difficult scene to watch.
This is a fight for our generation's survival. Her reaction is why young people desperately want new leadership in Congress. pic.twitter.com/0zAkaxruMI

To the kids’ credit—especially the little girl in the front—they didn’t back down. When Senator Feinstein chided one of the 16-year-old volunteers as someone who didn’t vote for her (due to her age), the tiny climate warrior jumped in to say “It doesn’t matter, we’re the ones who are going to be impacted!” (Hopefully she runs for Senate one day.)
Senator Feinstein dressing down a group of engaged activist kids was met with a resounding “WTF?” on Twitter:
Everyone knows its good politics to tell little kids to fuck off https://t.co/5DXVQRbDmQ

very disappointed in these kids. senator feinstein is an esteemed member of the senate who has voted for more iraq wars than all your parents combined. do you even know what a joint military resolution is you little shits https://t.co/j0XExJP7K3

very few senators have the courage to take on the pernicious influence of the kid lobby. glad to see that’s changing. if these children want to influence policy they should do it the right way: politely asking at a fundraising dinner https://t.co/SBhMwsZDLD

The only responsibility of public servants that never changes is the one to listen – particularly to our future.

What a heartbreaking display of cruelty and callousness (and willful blindness to the scale of the problem) from @SenFeinstein in this video. This is just jaw dropping stuff. These kids are deeply impressive, and deserve far better… https://t.co/eg2egBDZzO

Diane Feinstein sure knows how to deal with a hostile crowd of mouthy… **checks notes** … children who don't want to die. (She seems especially in touch when she drops the word "plurality" on their worried-they-won't-have-a-planet-to-inhabit heads.) https://t.co/gBUaeFZ1PP

But not everyone hated it. Feinstein won praise from many on the right:
Feinstein is the hero here https://t.co/V9c8VKuy8H

Even as radically left as she is she recognizes the sheer stupidity of what you clowns proposed. But please keep it up, you're helping conservative causes in ways we could never have paid for via advertising! https://t.co/qpD86Zwg4F

WTF I love Dianne Feinstein now https://t.co/IpPtXhukwg

Here’s hoping the future looks less like the one Sen. Feinstein seems resigned to accept and more like one these kids are energized to create.
