Elderly Mexican Man Brutally Beaten For The Crime Of Not Being White

Lately, there’s been a lot of talk in the world of politics about “civility.” The right asserted that a restaurant was being “uncivil” by refusing to serve Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, and Trump supporters started a smear campaign against the restaurant, ranging from bad Yelp reviews to actually pelting the restaurant with feces.  Noted civil libertarian Alan Dershowitz claims he’s being “shunned” in Martha’s Vineyard. Trump advisor Stephen Miller was called a “fascist” while eating in a Mexican restaurant because he was one of the people who strongly supported President Trump’s policy of separating migrant families at the border. A similar thing happened to Chief of Homeland Security Kirsten Nielsen, also in a Mexican restaurant (the audacity of people eating at Mexican restaurants immediately after tearing Mexican children from their parents truly boggles the mind). It seems that Republicans are really concerned about people being rude to them just because they’ve orchestrated some of the most heinous policies in recent memory. Boo hoo.

Interesting, though, how quiet these same people, who are so adamantly in favor of civility, were when, on the Fourth of July, an elderly Mexican man was beaten in the head and told “Go back to your own country.” Instead of celebrating America’s tenet of inclusion and acceptance, this poor old man got the hell beat out of him for accidentally bumping into a toddler on his regular evening walk around his Los Angeles neighborhood.

Rodolfo Rodriguez, 92, a legal U.S. citizen who speaks no English, was pushed to the ground by the little girl’s mother, according to KTLA. She then began beating him with a brick while shouting, “Go back to your country, why are you here?” at him.

A witness told CBS Local that she saw the attack as she was driving by so she stopped to call the police and take the woman’s picture. She added that four men joined the little girl’s mother in the assault, kicking Rodriguez and breaking his ribs. “When I take the picture, she said, ‘Oh, he tried to touch my girl.’ I saw everything, this is a lie. And when the guys came, they hit him in the face, his body, everything.”

Rodriguez’s grandson, Erik Mendoza, says his grandfather doesn’t know why he was attacked. Speaking to CBS Local, he said, “I’m just overwhelmed how anybody can do this to a human being at all. He’s 92 years of age. There’s no harm that he meant for you to treat him the way you did.”
