Mom Who ‘Invented’ Gender Reveal Parties Now Trashes Them: ‘Who Cares What Gender The Baby Is?’

The woman who claims to have invented the gender reveal party says she regrets her role in popularizing the event — and that one of her children is gender non-conforming.

Jennifer Karvunidis says she “invented” the idea of a gender reveal party when she was expecting her first child back in 2008, and a newspaper picked up the story from her blog.

Now, in a viral post sparked by a debate about gender reveal parties, she explains how she has “mixed feelings” about her “contribution to the culture.”

“It just exploded into crazy after that. Literally – guns firing, forest fires, more emphasis on gender than has ever been necessary for a baby,” Karvunidis wrote.

Who cares what gender the baby is? I did at the time because we didn’t live in 2019 and didn’t know what we know now – that assigning focus on gender at birth leaves out so much of their potential and talents that have nothing to do with what’s between their legs.”

Then Karvunidis shared how, in a “PLOT TWIST, the world’s first gender-reveal party baby is a girl who wears suits!”

Social media users praised Karvunidis for taking accountability for what many see as a harmful perpetuation of gender stereotypes. They also praised her for having the courage to change her perspective:

“Thanks for posting. Looking back and reflecting on where you have been and where you are now is very admirable. I for one am glad that these gender norms are crumbling around us.”

And the child who started it all? Now a fashion icon!
