Gina Rodriguez, an actor who stars in Jane The Virgin, issued an apology on Tuesday after she was called out for using the n-word in an Instagram video.
Rodriguez was singing the Fugees song “Ready Or Not” while getting her hair done and sang a portion of the lyrics that contain the n-word. People were not amused and the online backlash was swift.

Rodriguez deleted the video in question and issued an apology, saying “I am sorry. I am sorry if I offended anyone by singing along to the Fugees, to a song I love, that I grew up on. I love Lauryn Hill and I really am sorry if I offended you.”

The apology did little to placate her critics however, many of whom had a negative reaction to the apology being framed as remorse for causing offense rather than remorse for using the word itself. In response videos quickly popped up mocking the apology as insincere.

i'm sorry, i'm still stuck on the fact that Gina Rodriguez's excuse for saying nigga is "i was singing the song, Lauryn Hill raised me" when the line from the song is "Believe me, fronting niggas give me heebie-jeebies" and she just said "niggas give me heebie-jeebies"

Rodriguez then issued a longer, written apology on Instagram, writing that “In song or in real life, the words that I spoke should not have been spoken” and saying “I am so deeply sorry for the pain I have caused.”
