Being an introvert is actually more common than we have been led to believe: researchers estimate that introverts make up about 30-50 percent of the population. But being in such large and good company doesn’t ease the the introvert’s burden much (even with the Internet’s plethora of introvert memes), because we still feel crappy about our inability to hang out with people we don’t know, or our anxiety when we receive unexpected phone calls, or being put on the spot in a work or social setting.
Comedian Amy Schumer, in her 2016 autobiography The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo (I know I’m three years late, please, I beg of you, do not @ me), framed it ideally: “Being an introvert doesn’t mean you’re shy. It means you enjoy being alone. Not just enjoy it—you need it.”
“If you’re a true introvert, other people are basically energy vampires. You don’t hate them; you just have to be strategic about when you expose yourself to them—like the sun. They give you life, sure, but they can also burn you,” writes Schumer.
If this quote resonates with you because you at some point have suffered an “introvert hangover,” then you’re an introvert. And you’ll love these introvert memes.
