Most Americans don’t want a “guaranteed minimum” but instead “want to work for what they get” Ivanka Trump told Fox News on Monday night, responding to the Green New Deal spearheaded by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Speaking to Fox News’s Steve Hilton in an interview set to broadcast on Sunday, the first daughter and White House senior advisor explained how the U.S. economy is “doing very well” under her father’s presidency, and that the American people will refuse progressive economic policies set forth by AOC and the Democratic party.
“You’ve got people who will see that offer from the Democrats, from the progressive Democrats, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: ‘Here’s the Green New Deal, here’s the guarantee of a job,'” Hilton asked Trump, “and think, ‘Yeah, that’s what I want, it’s that simple.’ What do you say to those people?”
The first daughter replied: “I don’t think most Americans, in their heart, want to be given something. I’ve spent a lot of time traveling around this country over the last four years. People want to work for what they get.”
She went on: “So, I think that this idea of a guaranteed minimum is not something most people want. They want the ability to be able to secure a job. They want the ability to live in a country where there’s the potential for upward mobility.”
Twitter was quick to point out the hypocrisy of someone with the last name ‘Trump’ espousing “work for what you get” economics.

Ivanka Trump is of course the very first name that comes to mind when you try and think of prominent people who have ‘worked for what they got’ in life. https://t.co/AF3R54PwQy— Mehdi Hasan (@mehdirhasan) February 26, 2019
Here is Ivanka Trump's financial disclosure as a White House staffer, full of royalties from dad's businesses. You decide how true a believer she is in working for what you get. https://t.co/LxxuYUDD6n— Anand Giridharadas (@AnandWrites) February 26, 2019

my sister, who went to boarding school with Ivanka Trump, once told me that Ivanka would call all the other girls “darling” because she couldn’t be bothered to learn their names. they were 15. i’ve never forgotten that.— david ehrlich (@davidehrlich) February 26, 2019
