Kelly Ripa has drawn a considerable amount of ire for suggesting that her son is now living in “extreme poverty” after moving out and into his own place in Brooklyn.
While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week, Ripa claimed that her and husband Mark Consuelos’ eldest son, Michael, is “chronically poor” now that he’s moved out of his parents’ house simply because he… has to pay rent?
“I think he loves the freedom. He hates paying his own rent and he’s chronically poor,” she said. “I don’t think he ever really experienced extreme poverty like now.”

Considering the fact that Ripa and Consuelos are millionaires and are likely paying Michael’s rent or at least still helping him financially, the likelihood that he’s “chronically poor” is pretty slim to none. There’s also the fact that no one who’s truly experiencing “extreme poverty” has the option to move into their own apartment.
Unsurprisingly, people on social media did not take it well when they heard Ripa’s comments. Here are some of the best responses.

She is definitely out of touch. That’s how millionaires think. He wouldn’t know any type of property if it bit him in the ass.

The fact that she can speak glowingly about it definitely signals her son isn’t actually in “extreme poverty”. She so out of touch smh

“Extreme poverty?” Highly doubt it. Stop talking about things you have no clue about, Kelly Ripa. Ridiculous.

Extreme poverty is being engulfed in hopelessness, without a safety net. Playing “extreme poverty” is what anyone in Ripa’s very privileged family chooses to do.
