While speaking at the “Peace and Security in the Middle East” conference in Poland last week, Mike Pence clearly misjudged the crowd while calling for aggression against Iran and was left with deafening silence when he paused for applause. Pence, clearly expecting some kind of reaction at all, is silent and still for a full two seconds before opening his mouth a but and visibly giving his head a little shake like he needs to rouse himself out of his shock.
OMG — Pence was visibly shook in Poland when he received absolutely no reaction to what was clearly supposed to be an applause line about how “the time has come for our European partners to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal.” pic.twitter.com/biRxARZkcM

The conference in Warsaw, Poland was sponsored by the U.S., ostensibly to discuss how to best promote peaceful resolutions to the various conflicts in the Middle East with allies. Pence, veering a bit from the goal of peace, asked allies to withdraw from the nuclear deal between the U.S and Iran and echoed sentiments from the early 2000s that were used to justify the war in Iraq.
“The time has come for our European partners to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal and join with us as we bring the economic and diplomatic pressure to give the Iranian people the region and the world the peace, the security, and the freedom they deserve.”
This wasn’t the first time during the week that Mike Pence had been met with silence during a speech that clearly included a pause for clapping. Something similar happened at the Munich Security Conference when the Vice President offered the audience greetings from Donald Trump. The only difference was that this time, he may have not been expecting applause. During the excruciatingly awkward pause, he simply stares down at his notes while everyone waits for crickets to start chirping.
It’s not always easy delivering messages that everybody hates.
Meanwhile, Twitter users, particularly those from Indiana, are enjoying the generous helpings of that shameful joy.
Same. Now a national humiliation, Pence owes us Schadenfreude. How far pious disapproval has carried him, and how useless it was here. Drink it in, @VP - you’ve earned it! ?— ???rural America own goal??? (@OfLouisa) February 17, 2019

Pause for applause... no applause? Ok... breath and onto next sentence... oh mother, I need a hug with no pelvic contact...— Thomas Richner (@trichner) February 17, 2019
I can only imagine it said "hold for thunderous applause" on the teleprompter.— Steven Crosby (@heysi) February 17, 2019
Even gave them a 2nd chance to applaud, as though they didn’t understand the first time. “... and freedom they deserve” <crickets> (internal dialogue: OMG they don’t get it) Continues “we must not not let this opportunity slip from our hands” (internal: Whaaaat???!!!)— Kim Carnahan (@K_in_Cornelius) February 17, 2019
What’s surprising (or maybe not) is how long it takes him to realise the applause is not coming. Anyone else would have picked up on it immediately and quickly moved on, but he actually waits, hoping it might still come!— RightToKnow (@robbiec2) February 17, 2019

How can he be visibly shook when he never has any facial expressions?— Sopranoresister (@sopranospinner) February 17, 2019
It's really hard for ppl who have been trained like organ grinder monkeys (there are a lot of children raised this way) to behave a certain way...who get praise, attention, $$ for doing so....when they perform as usual & it no longer works. They have nothing to fall back on.— Ellen Enders (@EllenEnders) February 17, 2019
