‘You Don’t Have To Be Gay’—Fans Blast Miley Cyrus For Implying Sexuality Is A Choice

Miley Cyrus unleashed a whole lot of WTF during a recent Instagram live video with boyfriend Cody Simpson. The controversial singer, who has been a vocal supporter of the LGBTQ community, made a series of upsetting statements about feminism and sexuality in general that did not sit well with fans.

“Guys, I was being a little too, like…hard-core feminist vibes and, just like, I don’t know, not allowing anyone in, but now I am,” Cyrus said.

“There are good men out there, guys. Don’t give up. You don’t have to be gay. There are good people with dicks out there. You just gotta find them. You gotta find a dick that’s not a dick, you know what I mean?”

I don’t know what you mean, Miley! That’s not how any of this works!

You don’t need to be a gender theory scholar to understand that feminism is not about man-hating or being a lesbian to own the men. And saying “you don’t have to be gay” pretty much flaunts in the face of science as well as the queer community’s lived experience. It’s unkind to say. It’s wrong. It’s harmful.

Like a lot of folks, Cyrus’ conception of her own sexuality has shifted and evolved over time. She says she realized she was pansexual when she was 14. She has had high profile relationships with both men and women, including a long-term relationship and brief marriage with Liam Hemsworth.

“My whole life, I didn’t understand my own gender and my own sexuality. I always hated the word bisexual because that’s even putting me in a box. I don’t ever think about someone being a boy or someone being a girl, Cyrus told Variety in October 2016.

“What I preach is: People fall in love with people, not gender, not looks, not whatever,” she explained to Vanity Fair in February this year.

So, what happened? No one seems to know what caused Cyrus to make these comments, but a lot of folks are pretty mad at Cyrus’ irresponsibility.

“Is @MileyCyrus actually stupid? Cause this is a stupid message, from a stupid person, to idiots who think they ‘have to’ become gay because a gender disappoints them. That’s a stupid narrative encouraging the illusion that it’s a choice,” said one Twitter user.

Folks on Twitter also noted that Cyrus used transphobic language in her video.

“Not all ‘guys’ have dicks, Miley. Thought you knew better,” said one Twitter user.

Everyone’s journey to understanding their own sexuality is different. And while Miley has made and continues to make her journey in the public sphere, not everyone has the privilege to be so glib about their sexuality and gender identity. There are real consequences for the queer community just for being open, and Cyrus needs to examine why comments like this are harmful.
