That’s how long it took New Zealand to decide it would ban semi-automatic weapons.
After Friday saw a horrific terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch, NZ, in which a white nationalist shooter targeted muslims and killed 49 people, by Saturday the government of New Zealand had taken action. According to New Zealand’s Attorney General David Parker, the country will ban semi-automatic weapons.
And it was a weekend no less.
BREAKING: New Zealand attorney general @DavidParkerMP announces the government will ban semi-automatic guns.

Many online, especially in America, were impressed by New Zealand’s bold and efficient decision to actually address a problem instead of acting like change is impossible.
It's so weird that you can just identify the problem and fix it

Wait you can just do that https://t.co/FHQ43Fx5hU

Apparently doing something more than sending “thoughts & prayers” is an option???
Fuck your thoughts.🖕
Fuck your prayers.🖕
THIS is how it’s done.👇 https://t.co/vju6k5dWFd

They say “thoughts and prayers” differently in New Zealand, I guess https://t.co/X8I7EOtVHN
— Jessie (@NicCageMatch) March 16, 2019
Wow, in the U.S. we wouldn't even have finished saying the sentence "thoughts and prayers" yet. https://t.co/gQPq1u5o6g

what a crazy alternative to thoughts & prayers https://t.co/ZDKvMVOsnm

I want every single NRA-backed U.S. pol to explain why NZ can immediately pass a ban on semi-automatic guns and we can't.
And please, don't insult me by saying "the 2A" unless you can prove:
– individuals are a militia
– a ban on semi-automatic guns is a ban on ALL guns https://t.co/5rm3QKmzpz
— Geraldine (@everywhereist) March 16, 2019
No, this can’t be right. Everyone in the country needs to want it to happen and then the three most moderate members of the government have to get together and pick a policy that sounds like a compromise out of a hat, which doesn’t get passed anyway so nothing changes. https://t.co/R0Sg3NClJy
— Paul Blest (@pblest) March 16, 2019
And this is after having more extensive background checks. The massacre in NZ had a death toll of 49.
In the US, 100 people die by a gun EVERY DAY. Every day, ~20 children are shot and ~8 die. Each month, ~52 women die from being shot by their intimate partner. We do nothing. https://t.co/WCIXjkHPMs

Direct action. Exactly what these situations need.

It's crazy how some Americans will say they need weapons, but no matter how many guns we own, when it's our time to go, it's our time. We need to wake up and get off this foolishness.

Well done NZ.

Would expect no less from the Kiwi Citizens of New Zealand. Thank you @dataandpolitics, @DavidParkerMP and @jacindaardern. You and all of your Citizens are beautiful, what happened in your country was horrible & unlike our Nation, you will do something to stop it. #TRM pic.twitter.com/oQOCVnhMDC
