There’s a growing movement in GOP-controlled state legislatures to force Congress to convene a Constitutional convention in order to amend the United States Constitution. So far 28 of the requisite 34 state legislatures have called for a convention and another is taking steps to do the same. This is a dramatic escalation in the GOP war on the rule of law and norms in the United States.
Republicans don’t have a popular agenda. Cutting taxes for the wealthy is unpopular, even among Republicans. Paul Ryan’s wet dream of cutting Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security is so unpopular, Trump ran against it in the GOP presidential primary (and we all know how that turned out). Repealing Obamacare is another unpopular GOP position, which is why it failed spectacularly. Banning abortion? Also unpopular.
Republicans have won the popular vote in a presidential election only once in the last 25 years.
