30 People Who Who Got Tricked By Fake News In 2018

The term “fake news” has punctuated 2018 like nothing else. The president has set a new precedent for what “fake news” describes, broadening the definition from unflattering news articles to things he generally just doesn’t like to hear. In the month of August alone, Trump sent out 46 tweets that contained the words “fake” or “phony.”

This unmitigated and utterly unchecked use of the word “fake” has diluted its strength and meaning. Donald Trump’s calling into question nearly every source of information besides himself means that most of the sources he calls “fake” are not, in fact, fake. He just doesn’t like them. (CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Jim Acosta, the Russia investigation, unemployment statistics, the “fake dossier,” unspecified “fake books,” to name a few.)

But at least one source of liberal news is fake. It’s called The Onion, and it is a digital media company focused entirely on putting out satirical news articles—a fact that many struggle to understand. These are their stories. (dun DUN.)
