Donald Trump visited George Washington’s Mt. Vernon estate a year ago with French president Emmanuel Macron and that visit is in the news again thanks to a newly-reported account that makes Trump look the glorified used car salesman that he is.
According to Politico when Trump and Macron toured the home of America’s first president Trump’s comments were about his one true love…branding.
According to Politico Trump said of Washington and his estate:
“If he was smart, he would’ve put his name on it,” Trump said, according to three sources briefed on the exchange. “You’ve got to put your name on stuff or no one remembers you.”
Trump also allegedly criticized the size and workmanship of the now antique home, which is honestly hilarious, saying it was too small and the floors were uneven and that “He could have built the place better” and “for less money.”
POTUS also thought the rooms at Washington’s 11,000 square foot house were too small, the stair cases too narrow, and spotted unevenness in the floorboards. He could’ve built it better and for less money, he said https://t.co/7gQ29bqBHk— Eliana Johnson (@elianayjohnson) April 10, 2019
If you thought the internet would let the moment pass without a thorough roasting you would be incorrect.

Trump criticizing George Washington's branding strats is the most wholesome chuckle I've gotten out of this administration.— The Thoughtful Gamer (@MarcTTG) April 10, 2019

Trump just basically called George Washington dumb.— Devin Nunes’s Fragile Ego (@NunesEgo) April 10, 2019
When will people see he could care less about our country. In his mind it is HIS country and he can do whatever he wants.
George Washington is still having his name added to buildings, parks and monuments!— Skot2uk3000 (@skot2uk3000) April 10, 2019
The Trump name is just being removed from properties! pic.twitter.com/HUKEfIYzja
I’ve been to Mount Vernon. Everyone knows it’s George Washington’s. Only tRump would want his stupid name on it. Just shows what a narcissist he is! ?— Diane A (@tahoequeen21) April 10, 2019
Trump criticized George Washington for "not putting his name on Mount Vernon." Of course Trump's name has been removed from most of his buildings because the tenants hate him; it's also hard to picture future tourists visiting Trump's bankrupt casinos and empty hotels— Paul Rudnick (@PaulRudnickNY) April 10, 2019
Trump’s comments on George Washington are really quite revealing... We sure have come a long way in 45 Presidents... We went from ‘I cannot tell a lie’ to I cannot tell the truth... #WednesdayWisdom— Cyrus McQueen (@CyrusMMcQueen) April 10, 2019
of all things for Trump to be weirdly critical of, George Washington was his choice? ??????— Kenzie Henderson (@KenzieHend23) April 10, 2019
Even the over-caffeinated bobbleheads over at Morning Joe were openly laughing at Trump.
According to Politico Trump’s tour guide, Mt. Vernon president Doug Bradburn, pointed out that, considering the name of our nation’s capitol, George Washington was pretty good at getting stuff named after him.
There is a 99.99% chance he did not know Washington D.C. was named after George Washington pic.twitter.com/XTL3u6wCpb— Mike Drucker (@MikeDrucker) April 10, 2019
donald trump lives in a city named after george washington, across the street from a monument also named after george washington https://t.co/Ap71C9TGOt— Bobby Lewis (@revrrlewis) April 10, 2019
Let's see, there's a state, a street in every city, a monument, he's on the money, Rushmore, ohhhh and the city you live in is named after him.— My Two Cents (@MyyTwoCentss) April 10, 2019
He saw no need to toot his own horn.

The irony here of course is that Washington's name is on street signs, state flags, and municipal seals across the country -- not to mention the nation's capital where Trump himself resides -- not because Washington put it there, but because he made other people want to do it. https://t.co/Q9R4W25iy6— Robert Maguire (@RobertMaguire_) April 10, 2019
