Finding the person you want to spend your life with is an amazing feeling, as is getting engaged to them. Stephen Webber wanted to give girlfriend Kenesha Antoine the most romantic underwater proposal ever while they were on a dream holiday to Pemba Island, off the coast of Tanzania.
He put on flippers and goggles, grabbed a note he penned, and dove under the water, swimming over to their cabin window to press the paper against the window for Antoine to see. “I can’t hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you,” he wrote. “But…everything I love about you, I love more every day! Will you marry me?”
Webber even pulled out a ring box to show her before he began swimming up towards the surface of the water.
Yes! Yes! Yes!

Unfortunately, it seems he didn’t get to hear her response to his question, as Antoine later revealed via Facebook that Webber “never emerged from those depths.” The hotel later confirmed his death, admitting that everyone at the Manta Resort was “shaken to the core.”
While the investigation is still ongoing as to the exact cause of Webber’s death, his sister Mandy told CNN, “We know he drowned but we don’t know the circumstances surrounding. He dove down to propose but never came up.”
Antoine posted a touching tribute to Webber on Facebook, sharing the video she took of the underwater proposal as well as images of the couple together and of Webber alone.
“You were a bright light to everyone you encountered. You never met a stranger, and you brought so much joy to so many people. You were kind, compassionate, you regularly made me cry with laughter, and you showered me with a love like none I’d ever experienced,” she wrote.
“We never got to embrace and celebrate the beginning of the rest of our lives together, as the best day of our lives turned into the worst, in the cruelest twist of fate imaginable. I will try to take solace in the fact that we enjoyed the most amazing bucket list experiences these past few days, and that we both were so happy and absolutely giddy with excitement in our final moments together.”
Antoine described Webber as “my perfect love, my angel, my soul” and that she will “will carry the blessing of the love we shared with me forever. I will find you and marry you in the next lifetime, and the next, and the next, and the next…”
