“War and Peas” is the comic brainchild of art school lecturer Jonathan Kunz and freelance artist Elizabeth Pich. The duo hails from the German-French border town Saarbrücken and have been publishing their dark, super funny comics online since 2011. Since then, the popularity of “War and Peas” has grown to astronomical proportions, accumulating over 90,000 followers on Facebook and almost 180,000 on Instagram.
What makes the comics so funny is the dash of dark humor and cynicism present within each little four-panel visual; the characters are often slutty vampires, mischievous ghosts, precocious dogs, and robots who are more human than their creators. What makes them so brilliant is the way in which the final panel of each comic never fails to surprise.
Ultimately, the comics are a commentary on the modern human condition, on dating, relationships, love, death, friendship, jobs, on the hopelessness of it all and on our perseverance despite our awareness of that ultimate, unalienable truth: At the end of the day, nothing really matters.
