If you’ve been paying attention to the news for the past 24 hours, you’ll know that Donald Trump threw a tantrum when the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles wouldn’t all show up to the White House, so he disinvited them. Classy! He also accused them of kneeling during the national anthem (false), tacitly questioned their patriotism, and said they “decided to abandon their fans.” Whew, that’s a lot of awful to pack into less than a day, even for Trump.
Anyway, in place of the planned event celebrating the Eagles, Trump announced he would hold a “celebration of the American flag with Eagles fans and performances by United States Marine Band and the United States Army Chorus.” In other words, it was a fake patriotism party to highlight an ugly culture war that Trump gleefully exacerbates at every turn.
Unfortunately, Trump forgot to brush up on his patriotic songs before he went in front of the cameras, and they caught him struggling—and failing!—to get the words to ‘God Bless America’ right. Ladies and gentlemen, the president of the United States:
And you better believe Twitter brought the fire:
Now, there’s nothing wrong with not knowing the words to ‘God Bless America’—it’s sure as heck no ‘America The Beautiful’—but there IS something wrong with wrapping yourself in the flag, calling other people unpatriotic, staging a whole phony patriotism pageant to highlight the issue AND THEN NOT KNOWING THE WORDS TO THE SONG. It’s infuriating and stupid, and that’s where we are in America 2018. Thankfully it turns out there probably weren’t any Eagles fans in the crowd to be insulted by his ignorance.
