Incredibly, this was not a Trump moment, but an utterly baffling line of questioning at a congressional climate change hearing by Republican Representative Thomas Massie. It was so ridiculous that John Kerry, the guy everyone made fun of in 2004 for being too boring and robotic to even beat George W. Bush in the presidential election, was reduced to complete bewilderment, lapsing into full “is this actually happening” mode. In the space of less than a minute, Massie managed to create what just might be the dumbest moment in congressional history.
Drop what you're doing and watch as John Kerry explain his degree in political science to Rep. Massie (KY) who just doesn't get it.
Kerry finally says: "Are you serious? Is this really serious happening here.."
Every time Massie tries to one-up Kerry, it makes him look worse. pic.twitter.com/RH4dxaucoG

Basically, Massie gets offended at Kerry saying the president is trying to convene a kangaroo court, so he attempts to attack Kerry’s credentials. But instead of landing a burn on Kerry, Massie self-owns by outing himself as a politician who doesn’t understand what political science is.
Rolling Stone kindly transcribed the moment, because there is no better way to describe how dumb this is than just looking at it.
Massie: Isn’t it true you have a science degree from Yale?
Kerry: Bachelor of arts degree.
Massie: Is it a political science degree?
Kerry: Yes, political science.
Massie: So how do you get a bachelor of arts, in a science?
Kerry: Well it’s a liberal arts education and degree. It’s a bachelor…
Massie: OK. So it’s not really science. So I think it’s somewhat appropriate that someone with a pseudo-science degree is here pushing pseudo-science in front of our committee today.
Kerry: Are you serious?! I mean this is really a serious happening here?
What exactly was Massie going for here? Is he unaware that many politicians have political science degrees? What does he think people who want to be politicians typically major in? Chemistry?
Does he think that only people with environmental science degrees should be allowed to talk about climate change? If so, what is he even doing on this committee? If he thinks political science is pseudo-science, does that make all politicians, including Massie, frauds?
So many questions, so few answers. Just the stunned silence we all experienced today from witnessing what might be the Dumbest Moment in Congressional History.
Also, the many tweets that will solidify Rep. Thomas Massie’s place as one of the stupidest politicians in American history.
per Rep. Massie's logic, my Bachelor of Science degree makes me a scientist, and my Master's degree entitles me to play at Augusta National https://t.co/qXhVE0PLro

MASSIE: Secretary Kerry, you're married, are you not?
MASSIE: And yet, you claim to have a "bachelor's" degree???
— Josh Sawyer (@jesawyer) April 10, 2019
I feel so very, very, very sorry for Rep. Massie’s constituents. The level of mindless incompetency he displays here is almost beyond comprehension. https://t.co/UwlhbTSbEm

Massie has a bachelors' and a masters' degree from MIT, so either he's making a stupid bad-faith effort in owning a lib, or he's just being a conceited engineering nerd.
though tbh both of those things could be true https://t.co/OKQL50uQvE

Massie: Did you order the Code Red
Kerry: I'm not sure I–
Massie: DID YOU ORDER THE CODE RED
Kerry: Is this a serious thing? I mean–
Massie: WHAT KIND OF MOUNTAIN DEW WAS IT, MR. SCIENCE GUY https://t.co/4UwSq0FbkK

Massie added "and why do you drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?" Then threw up his hands in disbelief.

Massie is a member of an exclusive group of 535 Americans tasked with being in charge of 320 million people. Sleep tight, America. https://t.co/Lxrx8V5Q0H

i wish more Dems would do what Kerry did, which was basically throw a "wtf" right into the face of moronic Republicans, like this Massie dude. https://t.co/2ClNuGhkOv

I'm trying to think of how I would explain my double major in Art History and English to Rep. Massie… pic.twitter.com/ABYXMLz09L

162,946 Kentuckians chose to send Thomas Massie back to the House for a fourth term. Almost as scary as climate change itself.
— Philippe Reines (@PhilippeReines) April 10, 2019
Rep. Thomas Massie has confirmed that Republicans have no real arguments or facts to refute climate change. His questioning of fmr Secretary of State @JohnKerry at today's climate change hearing was the stupidest thing I've seen in years.

Massie: "Don't you use that smart-alecky tone with me. All your book learnin' don't make you better than anybody else. I read a book once and I didn't care for it."
— John Andreini (@jpandre52) April 10, 2019
Even John Kerry himself had a pretty good Twitter jab for Massie:
It's almost as if someone said "Congress has hit rock bottom" and Massie replies with "hold my beer." https://t.co/UtkOHFwnlz
— John Kerry (@JohnKerry) April 10, 2019
Meanwhile, the right is trying to spin this like Massie totally owned Kerry instead of performing the congressional equivalent of taking a swing at somebody and punching his own balls instead. Even better/worse, Massie himself is retweeting these takes, which does not make him look better here.
People in that room literally laughed at Massie. Spin it however you’d like.
— Jared Michael (@jaredmichael928) April 10, 2019
Massie, I didn’t even know who you were before watching Kerry drag you today, but it’s doubly hysterical to come to your twitter and watch you try and spin this as though you didn’t come across like a mouth breathing mooncalve. Man, thanks for the laughs!!
— Brennen Bartlett (@waywardsphotos) April 9, 2019
Massie *retweeted* this. Incredible.
The arrogance and stupidity in display is unreal. Kerry looked like he was being upbraided by a five year old.
And if Owens made your day, just wait: I'm sure she's likely to offer another endorsement of Hitler that'll make your WEEK.
— BlueDogPol (@BlueDogPol1) April 10, 2019
Rep. Massie obviously had to look very hard before finding a media source that defended him. Just like 3% of scientists deny climate change, there will always be a 3% wacko fake media, with all the Glenn Becks & Alex Joneses out there in la la land.
It’s called “the 3% Rule” pic.twitter.com/L6rfUMVPr1

Does Massie honestly thinking people in the room aren’t laughing at him? And isn’t it astonishing that people like Massie, who certainly isn’t stupid, can be so ignorant and closed-minded when it comes to certain basic principles?
— Randall Plant (@randall_plant) April 10, 2019
Are these the same people constantly trying to attack AOC’s intelligence? This is why we’re going to be wiped out from climate change, right here.
