While feminism and the number of people who proudly call themselves feminists are more prevalent than ever, sometimes it seems like toxic masculinity is doing everything in its power to cancel that out. Some men still have a sense of entitlement that leads them to become verbally abusive when they’re turned down by a woman, as a poster on Reddit’s Nice Guys subreddit recently found out.
Reddit user foot-waffle shared a series of texts she claims a friend received from a male classmate. While the interaction starts out innocently enough, they soon take a darker turn when he asks her out to a movie and she very nicely but clearly responds that while she’s happy to see a movie as friends, she’s not interested in a relationship at all.
Suddenly, the guy gets defensive and points out that he won’t be paying for stuff, despite the fact that the woman never asked him to nor assumed he would. He’s skeptical, however, as he claims that women “walk all over [him]” because he’s such a “nice guy.” (Yeah, sure.)
The woman responds that she’s not like that and would still love to see a movie as friends, but he’s no longer interested. After all, why on earth would a man want to hang out with a woman when there’s nothing in it for him? However, not satisfied with being a total jerk already, he doubles down on the assertion that if the woman would only agree to it being a proper date, he’d “make it worth her while.” Yikes.
In the end, the woman reminds him again that she’s really not interested in him, and she ends up getting a mouthful of not-so-nice words in return. Not only does he curse her out, but he also insists that she should feel flattered by his attention since “it’s not like [she has] guys chasing after [her] anyways.”
Wow, what a charmer. I can’t possibly imagine why he’s still single.
